It smelt of holidays. The previous evening Cannes harbour, with the setting sun, had also had that smell of holidays, especially the Ardena, whose owner swaggered in front of two girls with gorgeous figures.
Maigret is dazzled by the Côte d’Azur, but behind the perfect façade of sun-drenched villas, palm-lined promenades and luxury cars, he discovers the dark reality of a man who can’t escape his past any more.
